A Voice in the Wilderness

 When I was a child, I thought of this like I'd won the lottery. My parents wouldn't get me stuff? That's okay, God will. Problem is, too many adult christians still look at life that way. But God is not a vending machine. While He's not cruel, some stuff just isn't good for us. We'd hurt ourselves. But He cares for our needs. So, we won't often be in want. And there's a lot more I could say, but for today? Praise God for His perfect grace.  He did it once, He can do it again. It doesn't take a person of faith to tell you tht this world is broken. Yet hard as that is to live with, He promised us a new one. With Cancers being cured, and desserts made forests, things here are starting to look better. But very soon, God promised no more sorrow  death or pain, on all His holy mountain.  This idea is exactly what I'm trying to do here. Or to say it another way, we all struggle in our faith. Yes, I'm including myself. But here, you can find little nuggets that point to ways of growing that faith. And they help me in the same ways. Probably even more.  This passage always brings to mind Judges 13-16, the story of Samson. He did a lot by the power of God. Both in literal strength, but also, spiritually. I mean, his very birth and entire life was miraculous. But especially the end. He was captured and broken because of past mistakes. But he cried out to God, and was allowed to destroy his enemies. Yes, he lost too. Still, this all servs to glorify God, who forgives and assists.  We've all heard the bit about running and soaring, but that's less important. Yes, the gifts He gives are great. But the real clencher here is that He only blesses those who wait on Him. When we're young and strong, it's very easy to imagine that we know best. Still, all our striving is pointless if we ignore God. However much we know or can do, things wind up better if it's in His season and for His reason. At that point, it's the best.  Sometimes, we all have trouble waiting. I struggle with this a lot, even though He speaks to me directly. But right now, I'm taking the weekend to focus on helping my family survive the freezing cold in my hometown. Monday, I hope to be back at it. But if you stick with me, We'll both be blessed.  It seems confusing, even after long study. But John's poetry is really straightforward. Before anything else was, God was. So He was the word in the beginning. Also, Christ is God, as well as being spoken of long before His arrival. So He was with God, before all ages. But this is important because in Christ, we have every good thing The Father promised. Elsewhere, scripture says to be still in this knowledge. But the first part of this passage calls for loud singing! It feels like we can't do both. But really, there's no need to. When we have joy, it's from Him, and we can shout our thanks. But when the walls are closing in and it all feels hopeless, He's there. Whether on mountains or in valleys, He's got this.  This is just part of God's promised restoration. The beginning of happily ever after, in a way. First talked about after a refugee Israel was set free, it also points to what's coming for us in just a little while. Yeah, life is hard. Sometimes, it's crazy hard. But you can look and see, He keeps His word.  Who could even think of deliberaely rebelling against the Alpha and Omega? Nobody in their right minds. Sadly, we often don't think about it. Sin is just thre nature of our fallen hearts, and we're not always in our right minds. We get axious, or angry, or desperate. Yet somehow, as a patient father, even though we ruined what He gave, God still loves us.  For all we, like sheep, have gone astray. Simply put, we just can't do anything right. Not on our own, anyhow. But God, seeing our depravity, decided to step in and become one of us. Of course, since He can do anything, Christ was fully God and yet fully man. Which is great, because that meant His flesh died. But then, His Spiritr raised Him and also blessed all who believe.  Hope is what keeps us going. It strengthens us through the hard, sad parts of life. But this hope is different, it's bigger. Here, David shows confidence in not only an eternal reward to come, but also a present and constant comfort.  The light here is kind of a metaphor. It really refers to Christ, the light of the world. But also, in a very real way, this passage speaks of sun and moon being dark, because "The Lord will be your lighr." And while we're not there quite yet, we see His goodness all around.  As a repeated line in a song of praise, this idea was meat to be the focus our thoughts kept going back to. Sure, that's how songs work, but it's more than that. Singing and shouting is great but it only lasts so long. But it can also carry a belief you hold forever. Which fits, since God's love is forever.  That's a big risk I run in this line of work, every day. I try to share blessings from scripture, but I probably present just as much of my own opinions. Which is why believers have to live "In the Spirit." That will help us make sense of scripture, and lead us to other good teachers as well. I do what I can, but He "Will guide you into all truth."  This was the first day in rebuilt Jerusalem. It had been a long time coming, and emotions were running high. People felt happy, and a little sad, and scared of change. So they needed reminding. However strange events might seem, God has a plan. "A plan to prosper, and not to harm you." So whether your scared, or happy, or you feel like you lost control, remember.  While this begins Paul's closing, the sentiment should guide us, morning noon and night. Especially as The Holy Spirit is "Our very present help." Which means, He'll build us up with the full armor of God. And that means we can make through anything, however difficult, for the prize set before us. Through Him, we are more than conquerors.  The letter of the law isn't justice. The spirit of the law should be to defend justice, but that word actually means "What a person deserves." We all want that from a young age. And if wer're kind to others (Like, doing to them as we'd want done to us,) we'll be better off. Plus, knowing our place in the Divine order of things just makes us want to do more stuff like that. Which is probably why Jesus boiled everything down to those points. Super simple, but perfectly beautiful.  Only a small piece of God's promise, this freedom from injustice and fear covers so much of our lives! Not to mention the prosperity, health, and joy we recieve.  Here, the Lord Himself comes alongside a guy in need. Moses had talked to God, brought down plagues, and parted the sea, just to name a few accomplishments. But now, he was dead. Sure, he trained Joshua, but it was still a big job. So now, at the begunning of it, God tells Joshua, don't worry! I got this. And that was recorded because He tells us the same thing, every day.  If you know this scripture, you know Paul proceeds to outline ways of doing exactly this. But I'd like to focus here for a moment. The Bible is "God breathed." So here, the Father Himself says "Don't Worry!" Still, anxiety is at nearly pandemic levels. Instead, as Christians, we should pray about everything. (That's the big one.) and busy ourselves with spiritual songs. By doing this, we realize that He's got this, and it's all gonna be o-k.  This wording here is poetic. But even if not moths per-say, we've all seen how this world decays. Nothing really endures, at least, never the things we'd like to. But if you live in the Spirit, and look closely, you'll see examples of God's goodness. And that is not only better than everything else, but it will last throughout all ages.  Most believers don't physically  die. The idea here is that baptism is a big public form of submission. The starting pont, if you will. And as we continue to submit, aided by The Holy Spirit, our lives are transformed. We start to behave like Christ, and our lives just keep getting better (Not to be onfused with easier.)
